What an AI SEO expert actually does
An AI SEO expert — or AI SEO specialist, the two titles mean the same thing — works on being the source an AI assistant cites when someone asks it a question, rather than a blue link in a list. The job exists because search increasingly ends at an answer with two or three sources under it, which collapses ten results into a shortlist of three, and being fourth is now identical to being fortieth.
The mechanics are different from ranking. An AI engine is not matching a keyword to a page; it is retrieving what it can find about an entity, checking whether the sources agree with each other, and generating a recommendation. So how consistently your business is described across the web matters as much as any single page, and being mentioned somewhere trusted can beat ranking first on your own site.
That makes the work part technical SEO, part entity management and part digital PR. It is not a separate channel you can buy, and anyone selling it as one is selling you a report.
Why Alston, specifically
Anyone can call themselves an AI SEO expert in Sri Lanka: it is a field with a great deal of confident theorising and very little published data. So here is the data, all of it recomputed from platform exports attached to the case studies, with the window and filter visible on every screenshot.
| Figure | What it measures | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 302,037 | Times Microsoft Copilot cited an owned property inside an AI answer | Bing AI Performance export, 6-month windows |
| 147,783 | Appearances inside Google AI features across the same properties | Search Console, since May 2026 |
| At least 100:1 | Copilot citations per organic Bing click on ZPlatform.ai — a floor, not a measurement, because the two reports offer different windows | ZPlatform.ai case study |
| Named | SEOTamil.com is cited by name inside the Google AI Overview for its category term | SEO Tamil case study |
ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity publish no per-answer export, so no citation count is claimed for them — they are labelled “not audited” on every case study rather than implied. If an agency quotes you a precise ChatGPT citation figure, ask where the export came from.
What the work consists of
The uncomfortable truth is that most of it is SEO done properly, with the priorities reordered. That is a feature: if AI search stalls entirely tomorrow, none of it is wasted.
- Entity clarity. One consistent name, description, location and service list everywhere you appear, so a model resolves you to one business instead of three ambiguous mentions
- Structured data. Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, FAQ and Product markup, so machines read stated facts instead of inferring them from prose
- Answer-shaped content. The direct answer in the first two sentences, then the detail — because that opening block is what gets extracted
- Citation sources. Presence on the directories, listicles and publications that AI engines actually quote in your category, which in Sri Lanka is a short and reachable list
- Crawlability for AI agents. GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended mostly do not execute JavaScript. A site hiding its copy behind hydration is invisible to them regardless of how it ranks
- Share-of-voice measurement. Running the prompts your buyers run, on a schedule, recording who gets named — and labelling it sampling rather than measurement, because that is what it is
GEO, AEO and LLMO — the terms, plainly
Three acronyms are circulating for overlapping ideas, and the distinctions are smaller than the marketing suggests.
| Term | Stands for | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| GEO | Generative Engine Optimization | Being cited as a source inside a generated answer — ChatGPT, Copilot, AI Overviews |
| AEO | Answer Engine Optimization | Structuring content so a direct answer can be lifted from it cleanly |
| LLMO | Large Language Model Optimization | The entity-level work: being described consistently enough that a model knows what you are |
| SEO | Search Engine Optimization | Still the compounding base. All three above are extensions of it, not replacements |
We treat all of this as one programme rather than four invoices, because the same technical and authority work feeds every one of them.
Why this matters more in Sri Lanka, not less
It is tempting to file AI search under “later” in a smaller market, and that is the main reason there is barely a working AI SEO specialist in Sri Lanka to hire. It also gets the opportunity backwards. Sri Lankan search volumes are small enough that an AI assistant has very few strong local sources to choose from — most sites here carry no structured data, inconsistent business details and no presence on the publications a model would quote.
So the businesses that become the consistent, well-structured, widely-cited answer now will be difficult to displace later, and it costs very little to build in from the start against a great deal to retrofit.
There is a language dimension too. Ask an AI assistant to recommend a supplier in Sri Lanka and it will draw on English-language sources almost exclusively, because that is what exists. Being the best-structured English source about your category here is an unusually cheap position to take.
What no AI SEO expert can promise
Nobody controls whether an LLM cites you, any more than anyone controls Google’s rankings — and these surfaces change faster than search ever has. Anyone selling guaranteed ChatGPT placement is selling something they cannot deliver, and the fact that it is hard to disprove is precisely why the claim gets made.
What is reliable is the underlying work. Entity clarity, structured data and being cited by trusted sources have been good SEO for a decade and are now good GEO as well. That is the honest case for doing it: the downside is bounded, and the upside is being the name in the answer.
