Local SEO in Sri Lanka

Local SEO in Sri Lanka

If customers come to you, or you go to them, the map pack is worth more than the blue links above it. Local SEO is how you get into it.

Why local SEO outperforms everything else for service businesses

A local search has intent that ordinary search does not. Someone typing “dentist near me” on a phone is not researching — they are choosing, usually today. That is why the map pack sits above the organic results and takes a large share of the clicks before anyone scrolls.

It is also the cheapest competitive position available in Sri Lanka right now, because a majority of local business profiles are incomplete. Categories missing, no services listed, stock photographs or none, hours that were never updated after the last holiday. Simply finishing the profile properly moves businesses more often than any other single piece of work we do.

Google Business Profile optimisation

The profile is the product in local SEO. Everything else supports it.

  • Primary category — the single highest-leverage field, and the one most often wrong
  • Secondary categories for the adjacent searches you also want
  • Services and products listed individually rather than described in prose
  • Photographs of the real premises, staff and work, uploaded regularly
  • Hours, including special hours for Poya days and public holidays
  • Q&A seeded with the questions customers actually ask
  • Posts published consistently, because dormant profiles decay

Citations and NAP consistency

A citation is any mention of your business name, address and phone number online. Google uses the consistency of those mentions as a confidence signal — if six directories list three different phone numbers for you, the profile is less trusted, and it ranks accordingly.

Sri Lanka has a manageable set of directories worth being in, plus industry bodies and chambers that matter more here than a global citation-building service would ever guess. We build them by hand and keep a record, so you can audit it.

Reviews, and how to get them without breaking the rules

Review volume, recency and rating all feed local rankings, and reviews mentioning your service by name feed relevance too. But incentivised reviews violate Google’s policy and review gating — asking happy customers publicly and unhappy ones privately — is a policy violation as well as a bad idea.

What works is unglamorous: a request built into the point in your process where the customer is most satisfied, sent by the channel they already use, with a direct link. Then responding to every review, including the bad ones, in public.

Multi-location and service-area businesses

If you have branches, each one needs its own Google Business Profile and its own landing page, with content that genuinely differs — different staff, different photographs, different local detail. Duplicating a single page across eight towns suppresses all eight.

If you travel to customers instead of receiving them, you are a service-area business: the address is hidden and you define the districts you cover. Getting that setup wrong is a common reason a profile fails to rank at all.

Frequently asked questions

How long does local SEO take in Sri Lanka?

Google Business Profile changes can show within days to a few weeks, which makes local SEO unusually fast compared with the rest of search. Citation and review work compounds over two to three months. It remains one of the shortest paths from spend to enquiries available to a Sri Lankan service business.

Do I need a physical address for local SEO?

Not necessarily. If you travel to customers you register as a service-area business, hide the address and define the districts you cover. You do need a real address to verify the profile initially, and it must be a genuine place of business — virtual offices and mail drops get profiles suspended.

Can you fix a suspended Google Business Profile?

Often, yes. Suspensions usually come from an address that cannot be verified, a category or name that violates the guidelines, or keyword stuffing in the business name. Reinstatement means fixing the underlying cause and appealing with evidence, and it takes weeks rather than days.

Does local SEO work for online-only businesses?

No — local SEO is specifically for businesses with a physical location or a defined service area. If you sell online across Sri Lanka, ecommerce SEO is the relevant discipline.
